How is the moon phase calculated?
We compute the elapsed time since a known reference new moon (2000-01-06 18:14 UTC) and divide by the mean synodic month (29.530589 days). The fractional remainder maps to one of the 8 standard phases.
How accurate is this?
Within about ยฑ6 hours over a decade โ well inside the visual tolerance of which-emoji-fits-today. For precise astronomical predictions use NASA SVS or a dedicated ephemeris.
Why are there only 8 moon phase emojis?
Astronomy traditionally divides the lunar cycle into 8 named phases: new, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent. Unicode 6.0 (2010) shipped one emoji per phase.
Do moon phase emojis look the same on every platform?
Mostly yes โ they are abstract circular shapes with shading, so iOS, Android, Windows and Twitter render them very similarly. The ๐ 'full moon face' and ๐ 'new moon face' variants do differ in personality though.
