KEYBOARD REFERENCE

Emoji Keyboard Shortcuts

Every keyboard shortcut to open the emoji picker โ€” across every desktop OS, mobile platform, and the apps you actually use (Slack, Discord, GitHub, Notion). One scroll, zero guessing.

Desktop

OS-level emoji pickers โ€” work in any app on the system.

macOS

Control + Command + Space

Opens the Apple emoji picker / character viewer. Search by name.

Windows 10/11

Windows + . (period)

Modern Windows picker. Tabs: Emoji / GIF / Symbols / Clipboard.

Windows alt

Windows + ; (semicolon)

Identical to Win+. โ€” different muscle-memory.

Linux (GNOME)

Control + . or Control + ;

Works in GNOME / GTK apps. KDE varies โ€” try the system tray emoji picker.

ChromeOS

Search (๐Ÿ”) + Shift + Space

Search key is where Caps Lock would be on most Chromebooks.

Mobile

Tap-only โ€” no shortcut keys, but here's the fastest path.

iPhone / iPad

Tap ๐ŸŒ globe icon

Tap the globe (or smiley) next to spacebar to switch to the Emoji keyboard. Long-press for a swipe selector.

Android

Tap ๐Ÿ˜€ smiley icon

Gboard places the emoji button at bottom-left. SwiftKey: bottom-left smiley. Samsung: bottom-right.

Apps & web

Shortcuts inside specific apps โ€” most use colon + name autocomplete.

Slack

: then start typing name

Type :smile then pick. Cmd+Shift+\ on Mac opens the full picker.

Discord

: + name (or Ctrl+E)

Ctrl+E opens the full picker. Type :smile for autocomplete in messages.

GitHub

: + name in comments

Works in issues, PRs, commit messages. Limited to GitHub's :shortcode: list.

Notion

/emoji or : + name

Two ways: /emoji in any block, or just : start an inline emoji.

Figma

Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + \

Opens Figma's quick-actions where you can type an emoji name.

VS Code

: + name in markdown

Built-in for .md files. For all files: install the 'Markdown Emoji' extension.

Web / code

Need to embed an emoji in HTML, CSS, or a URL?

Pro tips

๐Ÿ”

Search by emoji name

On every native picker, the fastest path is typing the keyword (smile, fire, eyes) instead of scrolling.

๐ŸŽจ

Skin tone modifiers

Long-press any people emoji on most pickers to choose a skin tone. Mac: hover over the variant column on the right.

โฑ๏ธ

Recents shortcut

Every picker shows recently-used emoji first. Use this โ€” it cuts your time-to-emoji from seconds to milliseconds.

โšก

Power-user: Alfred / Rocket

On macOS, Alfred and Rocket both add Slack-style  triggers to any text field system-wide.

Frequently asked questions

What's the fastest way to type an emoji?

Whichever OS shortcut your hands remember. Macs: Ctrl+Cmd+Space. Windows: Win+. โ€” most people forget the period is required. Both let you search by name.

Win+. isn't working on my Windows machine โ€” why?

Three usual suspects: (1) outdated Windows version (needs 10 1809+), (2) emoji panel disabled in Settings โ†’ Time & Language โ†’ Typing, (3) some games / fullscreen apps eat the shortcut. Win+; is identical.

I don't see the ๐ŸŒ globe icon on my iPhone keyboard โ€” how do I add emoji?

Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Keyboard โ†’ Keyboards โ†’ Add New Keyboard โ†’ Emoji. Once added, the globe or smiley icon appears next to spacebar.

Linux doesn't have a global emoji shortcut โ€” what do I do?

GNOME 41+ has Ctrl+. or Ctrl+; in GTK apps. For system-wide, install ibus-emoji or run a launcher like Rofi with the emoji extension.

Why do Slack / Discord / GitHub use : shortcodes instead of OS pickers?

They use them for cross-platform consistency โ€” the colon syntax works whether you're on web, desktop app, or mobile. Each platform also adds custom emoji that don't exist in Unicode.

Should I use HTML entities or just paste the emoji in source code?

Direct paste is fine for modern UTF-8 files (the default everywhere now). Entities matter only if your file encoding might be ASCII / Latin-1, or for old email clients.
